One of Dickens’ best known and loved tales, the story of A Christmas Carol is so familiar that the reader almost forgets the meaning of this straight forward allegory, redemption. In this tale, Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter and greedy old miser who has no room in his life for kindness and love, is visited by his dead partner, Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge that if he does not change his ways, he faces a similar fate as Marley, who is weighted down by heavy chain that he says he forged in life when he was concerned only with money and not his fellow man.

Scrooge is then visited by three ghosts, who each carry out a thematic, yet entertaining, function in the story. The first is the Ghost of Christmas Past, representing memory, a memory of a time when he was more innocent and tender and had the ability to connect with another person. This ghost is followed by the Ghost of Christmas Present, representing empathy. Taking visits to several different scenes, Scrooge is reminded of the Christmas spirit and the moral ideas associated with the time of year—generosity and universal love. The feelings of compassion for those less fortunate begin to stir Scrooge as he is in this stage of his journey. Finally, while taking him through the events of an unnamed man’s death, the grime Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come symbolizes the fear not only of death, but of dying alone. When Scrooge realizes that this man is actually himself, the miser vows to change his ways in the hopes of changing theses “shadows of what may be.”

With each section of the book acting as a parable, we see this greedy, self-centered man wake up on Christmas morning with a spirit of giving and love. This classic tale has, and will continue to, teach its readers for years to come.

Sun Tzu’s The Art of War (孙子兵法) is an ancient Chinese military treatise composed during the late sixth-century BC. To this day it is still looked too for military insight and has been utilized throughout history by military leaders such as Mao Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, Baron Antoine-Henri Jomini, General Douglas MacArthur, Napoleon, and leaders of Imperial Japan have claimed to have drawn inspiration from the work. The Art of War has also been applied to business and management internationally.

We are proud to announce that The Art of War will be included in your SCROLL library. Whether you downloading the iOS app or just using the web reader, The Art of War will be pre-loaded for you – 100% free of cost.

iScroll is set to launch soon, in July 2011. So stay in touch and be on the look out for more announcements and news from iScroll.

For now, here are 5 legendary quotes from The Art of War:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Here are the quotes featured in the video in Traditional Chinese, phonetics and their English translations.

1. 凡用兵之法，全國為上；破國次之；全軍為上，破軍次之；

Fán yòngbīng zhī fǎ, quánguó wéi shàng; pò guó cì zhī; quán jūn wéi shàng, pò jūn cì zhī

“In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy’s country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good.”

2. 視卒如愛子，故可與之俱死。

Shì zú rú àizǐ, gù kě yǔ zhī jù sǐ.

“Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys”

3. 是故百戰百勝，非善之善者也；不戰而屈人之兵，善之善者也。

Shì gù bǎi zhàn bǎi shèng, fēi shànzhī shàn zhě yě; bù zhàn ér qū rén zhī bīng, shànzhī shàn zhě yě.

“Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.”

4. 故善攻者，敵不知其所守。善守者，敵不知其所攻

Gù shàn gōng zhě, dí bùzhī qí suǒ shǒu. Shànshǒu zhě, dí bùzhī qí suǒ gōng

“If the enemy is taking his ease, he can harass him; if well supplied with food, he can starve him out; if quietly encamped, he can force him to move.”

5. 知己知彼, 百戰百勝

Zhījǐzhībǐ, bǎi zhàn bǎi shèng

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.”

For more information about Sun Tzu’s The Art of War check out the wiki page!
